Tonight I saw Les Savy Fav at the Highline Ballroom. The band was awesome as always, but everything else about the evening…was fake. That’s my new all purpose slander. Fake. The indie rock aesthetic is a shoddy simulation of itself. It would be obtuse of me to even go on, as so much has ben said on this topic already. But I will harp on two things. The host of the evening was Zach Galifinakis. I used to find him funny, but tonight, I realized that his whole act is simply a mockery of a stand up comedian. And then the DJ played a bunch of “ironic” music from the 80’s that everyone pretended a little too hard to enjoy. Why do that when you could play good songs that everybody liked? Why pretend to be a fake comedian when you’re funny enough to be a real one? Whe grow an ugly moustache and look like a borderline mentally challenged person dressing themself for the first time?

Because you’re afraid that if you really try, people will judge you. As long as you’re not trying, then if anyone questions you, you can pretend it’s all a joke.

I blame George W. Bush & this war that we’re supposed to pretend isn’t really happening. Too much make believe is bad for the soul. Even when pretending, one must be sincere. Also, I tend to blame W for everything these days. Is there anything this man hasn’t ruined. If you are having erectile difficulties,or faulty wiring in your home, there is a god chance Bush is somehow involved. I’m fairly certain he hid my keys this morning and made me late for a meeting.

This isn’t meant to be a rant or negative in any way…I just wanted a good lead in to present a man who has the courage to be real in this day and age of supreme cynicism.

Tim Harrington Of Les Savy Fav is the real deal. The man does not hide. He is having genuine fun, and if you aren’t, that is your hangup. At the same time he seems to be very serious about his job. That job being: Rock Star. And not in the “If I pretend really, really hard to be Mick Jagger” way. More of a “I’m going to rip my shirt off because I’m a rock star, and rock stars are sexy even if they are fat and bald” Kind of vibe. If you are looking for sincerity, this is your guy.

Kudos, sir. I salute you.
